Cafe & Galerie de Gau at Von Clermontplein in Vaals is a quiet spot where the calm of a small-town cafe meets a subtle art vibe. This is not a bustling coffee chain but rather a local place where visitors can settle in for a relaxed afternoon with a drink and some informal bites. It’s particularly welcoming for those who appreciate a cozy, intimate atmosphere shaped by local character and the friendly presence of its owner, Peter.

The cafe’s menu focuses on a modest selection of beverages and light snacks rather than a full meal. You’ll find a range of beers including Grimbergen Blonde, simple coffee choices like Café Verkehrt, and cola for a casual refreshment. The food choices are limited but thought out: the grilled ham and cheese sandwich—or tosti—is often highlighted by regulars as one of the best quick bites in Vaals. There are also sweet options like cakes and the traditional Limburg pie (vlaai), which pair well with the drinks on offer.

Visitors often take their time here, whether sitting indoors surrounded by an eclectic mix of art and music or enjoying the garden in the back, which adds a uniquely local touch with its live chickens and outdoor tables. This garden space turns the cafe into a kind of small refuge on warmer days, perfect for lingering conversations or a quiet moment with a book.

Cafe & Galerie de Gau draws a diverse but community-minded crowd. People who value a laid-back pace and personal interactions find themselves at ease here. It’s a likely spot to meet locals who appreciate a well-made sandwich, a decent beer, and an environment that feels more like a neighbor's living room than a commercial cafe. Afternoons, especially on sunny days, tend to be the best time to soak in the atmosphere.

Overall, this cafe works well for those who want a pause from the usual tourist paths—a low-key place to share in simple pleasures, sip a familiar drink, and enjoy an unhurried connection to Vaals’ quieter side.

If you like art and a good wine this the place to be in Vaals. Be sure to try the grilled ham-and-cheese sandwich (tosti), probably the best in Vaals. This is not a restaurant, but a Cafe therefor I think the menu is limited to the sandwich, some pie (vlaai) and some other small cafe snacks like nuts. In the back there is a garden which has a couple of really beautiful live chickens and some tables and chairs to enjoy the sun. The reading table has a couple of newspapers and a couple of challenging puzzle games.

Such a pleasure to walk into Peter's home cafe, welcomed by warmth, both heartfelt human and physical, Roxy Music and a wealth of nice stuff to rest one's eye on. My appreciation, compliments and respect Peter! Fred.
